Bundles of rice straw, Tsuruta, Aomori-ken, Japan, 1993

I arrived in Tsuruta just before the rice harvest. After going through the fields with sickles just like people have been doing there for hundreds of years, the farmers tied the leftover rice straw up into bundles like this.

Some of them hauled the rice straw away, probably to be made into tatami (mats) or other useful things; others just burned it in place.
