The Kiln Mouth, 1993

The mouth of the kiln on the sixth or seventh night. The wood piled on the right in the photo is the stack Matsumiya or his assistants (or myself, one lucky night) would stoke from for most of the firing. Towards the end of the firing of the first chamber, when it needed to be pushed up "to temperature", there was a fire brigade (hah hah) of two or three wheelbarrows going back and forth from the wood piled around the shed to the mouth of the kiln.

You can see part of the main pile stacked up behind the kiln.
